Watermelon is a 4th of July staple, and watermelon juice stains are nearly inevitable — especially with kids. The good news: watermelon stains are relatively easy to remove compared to wine or BBQ sauce, as long as you act quickly. The pink-red pigment from watermelon is lycopene, which is similar in chemistry to tomato pigment.
On Clothing and Fabric
Watermelon Stain Removal
- Blot up excess juice immediately — use clean white cloth or paper towels
- Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric — forces juice out rather than in
- Apply dish soap or laundry detergent directly to stain, work in gently
- Let sit 5–10 min
- Rinse cold
- If stain remains: mix 1 tbsp white vinegar + 1 tbsp dish soap + 2 cups warm water; apply, let sit 5 min, blot and rinse
- For persistent pink tint: apply hydrogen peroxide (3%) to white or light fabrics, let sit 15 min, rinse
- Launder cold — check before drying
On Carpet
- Blot immediately — absorb as much juice as possible before it penetrates
- Apply cold water, blot again
- Mix: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp white vinegar + 2 cups warm water
- Apply to stain, work from outside in, let sit 5 min
- Blot with clean cloth, rinse by blotting with cold water
- Dry thoroughly — place dry towels over the area
On Upholstery
- Blot immediately and treat same as carpet
- Use minimal water to avoid soaking the padding beneath
- Fan dry to speed drying time
On White Fabric or Linens
White fabrics offer the most aggressive treatment options:
- Apply hydrogen peroxide directly and let sit in sunlight — UV + peroxide combination is very effective on lycopene stains
- Oxygen bleach soak for 1–2 hours before washing
- These treatments should remove watermelon stains completely from white fabric
Don’t overthink it: Watermelon juice stains are primarily water — which means dilution and quick action are highly effective. Immediate cold water rinse alone removes a large portion of the stain. The remaining color treatment is usually minimal.
What about watermelon on wooden furniture or a picnic table?
Wipe up watermelon juice immediately from wood — the sugar and acid can penetrate unfinished or worn wood fairly quickly. For fresh spills: dry wipe first, then damp cloth. For stained wood: lemon juice + baking soda paste applied with a soft cloth and wiped off after 5 minutes works well.
