How to Remove Sunscreen Stains From Fabric and Furniture

Sunscreen leaves oily, orange-tinted stains on almost everything — here’s how to remove them completely.

Sunscreen is everywhere at a summer party — and it ends up on everything: towels, clothes, patio chairs, car seats, and pool furniture. Spray sunscreen is particularly notorious for leaving a sticky residue on surfaces it was never intended to touch. The orange or yellow staining that sometimes appears is caused by avobenzone (a UV filter) reacting with metals in water. Here’s how to tackle it.

Why Sunscreen Stains Are Tricky

Sunscreen is oil-based and contains UV-filtering chemicals. On fabric, it penetrates deep into fibers. The orange discoloration appears when avobenzone (found in most mineral-filter sunscreens) reacts with iron in tap water. Once this reaction occurs, the orange stain is different from the original sunscreen stain and requires different treatment.

Don’t apply water first — blot off as much sunscreen as possible with a dry cloth
Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch to absorb remaining oil — let sit 15 min
Brush off powder
Apply dish soap (Dawn is particularly effective for oil-based stains) directly, work in with fingers
Let sit 15–20 min
Rinse with cold water
Launder in warm water — do not use cold (oil stains release better in warm water)

Orange/Yellow Avobenzone Staining

This specific stain pattern (orange or rust-colored discoloration from sunscreen) requires a different approach:

Do NOT use hot water or bleach — these set avobenzone stains permanently
Apply white vinegar to the stain and let sit 15 min — breaks down the mineral compound
Rinse cold, then apply enzyme-based stain remover
Launder with enzyme detergent
For stubborn cases: apply lemon juice (citric acid) and place in direct sunlight for 1–2 hours before washing

On Outdoor Furniture

Plastic or metal: Wipe with rubbing alcohol — cuts through sunscreen oil immediately
Outdoor cushion fabric: Dish soap + warm water scrub; for oily residue, a baking soda paste scrub first
Wicker: Soft brush with dish soap + water mixture; rinse and dry immediately
Car seats/upholstery: Enzyme-based upholstery cleaner; test in hidden area first

Prevention for Future Parties

Apply sunscreen 15–30 min before your event — fully absorbed sunscreen transfers much less to surfaces
Keep a towel at pool/water entry points to wipe off excess sunscreen
Avoid spray sunscreen near fabric furniture and vehicles

Pool Liner Warning: Spray sunscreen on skin near a pool creates an overspray that lands in the water and on the waterline tile. After a party, clean the waterline immediately — sunscreen oil left on pool tile or vinyl liner becomes extremely sticky and attracts debris, creating a permanent scum line that requires much more effort to remove later.

My white towel has an orange sunscreen stain that won’t wash out. Help?

This is avobenzone staining. Soak the towel in white vinegar + cold water (1:4 ratio) for 30 minutes. Wring out, apply enzyme laundry detergent paste to the stain, let sit 1 hour. Wash in warm water with enzyme detergent. Do not use bleach or hot water — they permanently set this type of stain.
