How to Clean Tablecloths and Napkins After a Party

Party tablecloths and napkins collect the full range of cookout stains in one sitting. The good news: most party stains are completely removable if treated correctly and promptly. The bad news: several common “stain-fighting” instincts (hot water, rubbing, immediate machine washing) actually set stains permanently. Here’s what actually works.

The Golden Rules Before You Start

• Cold water first — always. Hot water permanently sets protein-based stains (food, beer, wine). Start cold.
• Blot, never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into fabric fibers.
• Treat before machine washing. Putting a stained linen in the washing machine without pre-treating often locks in the stain.
• Scrape solids first. Any solid matter (food, thick sauce) should be scraped off before applying water or cleaner.

By Stain Type

Red Wine

1. Blot up as much wine as possible immediately
2. Pour cold water over the stain from the back of the fabric — push stain out rather than in
3. Sprinkle generously with salt or baking soda — absorbs remaining wine
4. Let sit 5–10 minutes, brush off
5. Apply a mixture of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide (1:2 ratio) to remaining stain
6. Let sit 30 minutes, rinse cold, launder as normal

BBQ Sauce and Ketchup

1. Scrape off excess — use a spoon or butter knife, working toward the center
2. Run cold water through the back of the fabric
3. Apply dish soap directly, work in gently with fingers, let sit 5 min
4. Rinse, then apply white vinegar if any color remains
5. Check before putting in the dryer — if stain remains, treat again; heat sets it permanently

Grease and Butter

1. Sprinkle baking soda, cornstarch, or talcum powder liberally — absorbs oil
2. Let sit 15–20 minutes
3. Brush off powder
4. Apply dish soap directly to stain (dish soap is specifically designed to cut grease)
5. Work in gently with a soft brush or fingers, let sit 10 min
6. Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric type

Mustard

Mustard is particularly difficult because it contains turmeric, which is a natural dye.

1. Scrape off as much as possible
2. Rinse with cold water
3. Apply dish soap + white vinegar mixture
4. Sunlight is very effective on turmeric stains — lay wet fabric in direct sun after treatment
5. Repeat treatment if needed before machine washing

Beer and Soda

• Rinse with cold water immediately
• Blot remaining residue
• Apply dish soap or laundry pre-treater
• Launder normally — these stains are generally the easiest to remove

Machine Washing Tips

• Wash tablecloths separately from regular laundry — they’re large and need room to agitate
