How to Clean Plastic Lawn Furniture Without Scratching

Restore yellowed, grimy plastic outdoor furniture without damaging the surface.

Plastic lawn furniture is durable and affordable, but it’s prone to yellowing, UV damage, and surface grime. The mistake most people make is using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers that leave micro-scratches — which then collect more dirt faster. Here’s how to clean plastic furniture effectively without scratching.

General Cleaning — Light Grime

  • Mix warm water + 2 tbsp dish soap
  • Apply with a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge (NOT steel wool or abrasive pads)
  • Wipe all surfaces, rinse with a hose
  • For stuck-on grime: a soft-bristle brush (like a vegetable brush) is safe for plastic

Removing Yellowing and UV Discoloration

White plastic furniture yellows from UV exposure and oxidation. The most effective restoration method:

Plastic Whitening Method
  1. Clean the furniture first with soap and water
  2. Mix: 3/4 cup oxygen bleach (OxiClean) + 1 gallon warm water
  3. Apply to all yellowed surfaces with a sponge
  4. Let sit in direct sunlight for 15–30 min (sunlight + OxiClean is the key combination)
  5. Scrub gently with a soft brush or sponge
  6. Rinse thoroughly
  7. Repeat for heavily yellowed pieces — multiple rounds compound the brightening effect

For Stubborn Stains

  • Mold/mildew: Mix 1 tbsp bleach + 1 gallon water; apply with soft cloth, let sit 10 min, rinse
  • Tree sap: Rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth — dissolves sap without scratching
  • Rust stains: Bar Keepers Friend paste applied gently with a soft cloth
  • Sunscreen/grease: Dish soap directly, let sit, wipe with soft cloth

Protecting Cleaned Plastic Furniture

  • Apply a thin coat of car wax after cleaning — creates UV-protective barrier and makes future cleaning much easier
  • 303 Aerospace Protectant is specifically designed for plastic and UV protection — excellent on outdoor furniture
  • Cover when not in use — UV is the #1 cause of yellowing and degradation
Magic Eraser Caution: Magic erasers work on plastic, but use very light pressure — they’re fine abrasives that can cause micro-scratches if rubbed firmly. Reserve for spot treatments on specific marks, not full-surface scrubbing.

My plastic chairs have permanent yellowing even after OxiClean treatment — what now?

Very deep oxidation in the plastic polymer itself can’t be fully reversed. Touch-up spray paint designed for plastic (Rust-Oleum 2X Spray Paint in matching white) is the best option for severely yellowed pieces. Clean, lightly sand with 400-grit sandpaper, apply 2 light coats. The result is a fresh surface at a fraction of replacement cost.
