Spring cleaning has a different meaning in Las Vegas than in most of the country. While other regions are opening windows and airing out homes after winter, Las Vegas homeowners are preparing for the most demanding season of the year — 110°F temperatures, the AC running around the clock, and the beginning of monsoon dust storms. A pre-summer deep clean addresses the specific systems and surfaces that summer stresses most, and doing it in March or April, before the heat arrives, is dramatically more comfortable than doing it in June.
The AC system is your most important appliance from May through September. Before summer, replace all HVAC filters, clean all supply and return register faces, and schedule a professional AC tune-up if you haven’t done one recently. Clean the outdoor condenser unit: turn off power at the disconnect, and spray the condenser fins with a garden hose from inside out (not from outside in — this pushes debris deeper). Desert dust and cottonwood seed (prevalent in spring) clog condenser coils and reduce efficiency. A clean condenser runs cooler, uses less electricity, and is far less likely to fail on a 115°F July day.
Summer heat makes air sealing your home far more important than in winter. Before summer, inspect and replace any cracked or damaged weatherstripping around exterior doors — you can feel the heat coming through gaps on a hot day, and every gap lets conditioned air out and hot air in. Check window seals and caulking for cracks that developed during winter temperature cycling. Clean window tracks and door thresholds — accumulations of desert debris in tracks can prevent proper sealing. A well-sealed home in summer requires less AC effort and maintains comfortable temperatures more easily.
Before pool season starts, address accumulated winter debris and hard water deposits on the pool deck, coping, and pool equipment. Pressure wash decks and patio areas now — pressure washing in summer heat is genuinely uncomfortable and the cleaning solution evaporates before it can work. Check and clean outdoor furniture, replace worn cushions that won’t survive another summer, and inspect patio umbrellas for damage from winter winds. For outdoor kitchens, clean the grill thoroughly, check gas connections, and clean outdoor refrigerator coils before they’re needed for summer entertaining.
Pre-summer interior priorities: deep clean the refrigerator — it works harder in summer and efficiency matters; clean ceiling fans and reverse their direction for summer (counterclockwise when viewed from below creates a cooling downdraft); wash window treatments and blinds that will be closed during peak heat hours; clean behind the refrigerator’s condenser coils (accessible by pulling the fridge away from the wall); check all bathroom exhaust fans — they run more in summer and proper function prevents humidity buildup. A pre-summer deep clean in April is one of the most cost-effective things a Las Vegas homeowner can do for both comfort and appliance longevity.
