How to Clean and Maintain Composite Decking in Las Vegas Heat

Composite decking — made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic — has become popular in Las Vegas homes for outdoor decks and patios because it doesn’t require staining, doesn’t rot, and withstands moisture better than wood. But Las Vegas’s combination of intense UV radiation and extreme heat creates specific challenges: UV exposure fades composite faster than in moderate climates, high surface temperatures (composite decks in Las Vegas summer can reach 140–160°F in direct sun) make barefoot use painful, and desert dust and mineral deposits from sprinklers require regular cleaning to prevent surface staining.

Routine Cleaning

Sweep composite decking weekly to remove desert dust and debris — fine silica grit acts as sandpaper underfoot and can gradually scratch composite surfaces. For washing, use a composite deck cleaner (available at home improvement stores) or a mild solution of dish soap and water. Scrub with a soft-bristle brush in the direction of the board grooves — scrubbing across the grain traps debris in the grooves and can scratch the surface. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid pressure washing at high pressure — most composite manufacturers recommend 1,500 PSI maximum, and the nozzle should never be held closer than 8 inches from the surface. High-pressure washing can raise composite grain and damage the protective cap layer.

Dealing With Specific Stains

Sunscreen and body oil stains are common on Las Vegas pool decks and can be difficult to remove if allowed to bake in. Treat them as soon as possible with a composite deck cleaner containing a degreasing component. For mold or mildew (possible in shaded areas with sprinkler overspray), an oxygen bleach solution (not chlorine bleach, which can fade composite) is effective — apply, let sit 15 minutes, scrub, and rinse. For mineral deposits from hard water or sprinkler contact, a phosphoric acid-based cleaner formulated for composite removes calcium deposits without damaging the surface. Check the stain type before treating — using the wrong product can cause permanent discoloration.

UV Protection

Most quality composite decking contains UV inhibitors, but Las Vegas’s sun intensity exceeds what most products are designed for in the long term. Capped composite performs better than uncapped in UV resistance. Consider a UV-protective composite sealant designed specifically for composite material — these products add a layer of UV protection and can slow fading noticeably. Avoid oil-based deck sealers and stains designed for wood — these don’t penetrate composite and can leave a sticky surface that attracts dirt. Some composite manufacturers void warranty coverage if non-approved sealants are applied, so check your product documentation.

Heat Management

The surface temperature problem is real — darker composite colors reach higher temperatures in Las Vegas sun. There’s no product solution for this, but design solutions help: shade sails, pergolas, or patio covers reduce sun exposure dramatically and make composite decking comfortable for summer use. Lighter composite colors run cooler than dark colors. If you’re planning a new deck or renovation, keep Las Vegas summer temperatures in mind when selecting composite color — a beautiful dark gray deck may be unusable without shoes from June through September. Cool-deck coating products designed for pool surrounds aren’t appropriate for composite, but composite-specific cooling technologies are now available from some manufacturers.
