How to Remove Bird Droppings From Patio Furniture

Bird droppings are one of the most frustrating aspects of outdoor furniture maintenance — and during summer when birds are active and food is out at parties, they’re especially common. The key to easy removal: never scrub dry droppings. Here’s the correct approach for every surface type.

Why You Should Never Scrub Dry Droppings

Dry bird droppings are very abrasive when scrubbed directly. The uric acid in the droppings also etches surfaces — particularly paint, metal finishes, and some plastics — when left to sit. Scrubbing dry drops spreads the abrasive material and can permanently scratch the surface. Always rehydrate first.

On Plastic or Resin Furniture

On Metal Furniture (Aluminum, Steel, Wrought Iron)

• Rehydrate droppings with water, wait, wipe off
• Clean residue with dish soap + water, rinse and dry immediately
• For metal with paint: inspect for etching after cleaning — bird droppings’ uric acid can eat through paint quickly if left over 24+ hours in hot weather
• Touch up painted metal after cleaning if any paint damage is visible

On Fabric Cushions

• Wet and soften, then remove with a spoon or plastic scraper — don’t rub
• Apply enzyme-based stain remover to any remaining stain
• Let sit per product instructions, rinse
• Launder cushion covers if removable; spot dry if not

On Wood Furniture

• Wet and soften — let water sit longer on wood (3–5 min) to avoid scrubbing that raises grain
• Remove with a soft cloth
• Clean with mild soapy water, wipe with the grain
• Re-apply wood oil or sealant to the affected area after drying

Deterring Birds from Patio Areas

• Remove bird feeders near the patio before hosting parties
• Reflective tape or pinwheels hung from pergolas or fences deter birds effectively
• Owl or hawk decoys (repositioned regularly so birds don’t habituate) work short-term
• Covering furniture with fitted covers when not in use prevents accumulation
