How to Remove Coffee and Soda Stains From Upholstery

Tannins, sugar, and carbonation — what makes coffee and soda stains stick, and how to remove them.

Coffee and soda are everywhere at parties, and upholstered furniture is a prime target for spills. Both are tannin-based stains (coffee more so than soda) that can permanently discolor fabric if allowed to dry. The good news: both respond very well to prompt treatment with simple household supplies.

Coffee Stains on Upholstery

Fresh Coffee Stain

Blot immediately — absorb as much coffee as possible before any other step
Apply cold water and blot again — dilutes remaining coffee
Mix: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp white vinegar + 2 cups warm water
Apply to stain with a clean cloth, working from outside edge inward
Let sit 5 min, blot
Rinse by blotting with cold water
Place dry towels over area, press firmly — draws remaining moisture up
Fan dry completely

Coffee with Cream or Sugar

Coffee with cream or sugar adds grease and sugar components. Treat with:

Dish soap applied directly first (cuts through fat from cream)
Let sit 10 min, blot
Then apply the dish soap + vinegar + water mixture
Rinse and dry

Soda Stains on Upholstery

Blot excess immediately — carbonation spreads soda aggressively
Apply cold water and blot
Mix dish soap + cold water; apply, blot, rinse — most light-colored sodas clean up easily
For dark sodas (cola, root beer): treat as coffee stain above — the caramel coloring requires the vinegar step
Energy drinks: treat aggressively — they contain multiple dyes and B vitamins that stain persistently

Checking Your Fabric Type

Look for the cleaning code on a tag beneath cushions: W (water-based cleaners), S (solvent only), WS (both), X (dry clean only)
W and WS fabrics: use the methods above
S fabrics: use dry cleaning solvent, not water
X fabrics: blot only, then call a professional

Dried Coffee Stain: Rehydrate with cold water first — let sit 5 min to re-dissolve the tannins. Then apply the vinegar + dish soap mixture. Dried coffee requires 2 rounds of treatment. Tannin stain removers (available at wine or fabric stores) are particularly effective on set coffee stains.

Why does my upholstery look darker after cleaning a coffee stain?

This is a water ring from the cleaning moisture wicking through to the backing material and drying unevenly. To fix: dampen the entire cushion surface evenly (don’t just spot-wet), let dry slowly. This creates an even drying pattern and eliminates the ring. A hair dryer on low heat while the fabric is still damp also helps prevent rings.
