How to Remove Ketchup and Mustard Stains

Two of the most common cookout stains — completely different chemistry, completely different treatments.

Ketchup and mustard are served together at nearly every cookout, but when it comes to stain removal they need different approaches. Ketchup is a tomato-based stain that responds well to cold water and enzymatic cleaners. Mustard contains turmeric — a natural dye — which makes it one of the most stubborn stains in existence. Here’s how to beat both.

Ketchup Stain Removal

On Fabric and Clothing

  1. Scrape off as much excess ketchup as possible — use a spoon or butter knife, working from edges toward center
  2. Run cold water through the back of the fabric — forces stain out rather than further in
  3. Apply dish soap directly to the stain, work in gently with fingers
  4. Let sit 5 min
  5. Rinse cold, check if stain has lifted
  6. If stain remains: apply white vinegar, let sit 5 min, rinse
  7. Launder in cold water — check before drying; heat sets tomato stains

On Carpet and Upholstery

  • Scrape off excess first
  • Apply cold water, blot
  • Mix: 1 tbsp dish soap + 2 tbsp cold water; apply, let sit 5 min, blot
  • Rinse by blotting with cold water
  • For stubborn tomato stains: 3% hydrogen peroxide applied directly works well

Mustard Stain Removal

Mustard stains are notoriously difficult because turmeric (the spice that gives mustard its yellow color) is one of nature’s most powerful natural dyes. It bonds to fabric fibers on contact.

On Fabric and Clothing

  1. Scrape off all excess mustard immediately — every bit you remove now is less pigment to fight
  2. Do NOT rinse with water immediately — water can spread the stain. Remove the solid first.
  3. Apply dish soap or liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain, work in well
  4. Let sit 5–10 minutes
  5. Rinse with cold water
  6. Apply white vinegar to the stain and let sit 5 min — vinegar reacts with turmeric to help break it down
  7. Launder in cold water
  8. The sunlight trick: Lay the damp, treated garment in direct sunlight for 1–2 hours. UV light breaks down turmeric pigment and can remove or significantly lighten mustard stains that resist washing.
OxiClean for Mustard: For set or stubborn mustard stains, soak in OxiClean + cold water for 2–6 hours. This is significantly more effective than repeated standard washing. Check after soaking before putting in the dryer.

On Carpet

  • Scrape excess first
  • Mix: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp white vinegar + 2 cups warm water
  • Apply, let sit 10 min, blot
  • For remaining yellow stain: 3% hydrogen peroxide applied directly — let sit 20 min in a sun-exposed area if possible
  • Blot and rinse cold

My white shirt has an old dried mustard stain that won’t come out — any hope?

Yes. Soak the stained area in oxygen bleach (OxiClean) + cold water for 6–8 hours, then apply an enzyme-based stain remover and let sit overnight. Launder cold. If yellow remains after washing, lay the damp item in direct sun for 2–3 hours — this is often the tipping point for turmeric stains. Multiple rounds may be needed.
